In a joint operation, two German aid organisations have rescued more than 60 boat migrants in distress in the central Mediterranean Sea.
The migrants had been at sea for a day and a half on an unseaworthy rubber dinghy, the NGO Sea-Eye said on Saturday. The crews of the Sea-Eye 4 and the Rise Above of the Dresden-based organisation Mission Lifeline were involved in the operation on Friday evening.
According to the report, twelve unaccompanied minors were among those rescued.
The volunteers of the donation-financed organisations reached their area of operation off the coasts of Tunisia and Libya a few days ago.
Migrants usually set off from North Africa in unseaworthy boats to reach the EU by sea. Especially in winter, the crossing is risky because of the danger of bad weather and rough sea conditions.
Most of them reach Italy, where, according to the Interior Ministry, more than 98,700 boat migrants have arrived so far in 2022, significantly more than in the same period last year (around 63,400).
Again and again, boats capsize and people drown. According to UN figures, more than 1,360 people are dead or missing in the central Mediterranean so far this year.
